This music player lets me leave my phone at home when I exercise — here’s how it works

Listening to music while working out can help get you in the mood and push yourself as hard as possible. Many people turn to their phone for their workout music, but there’s always a risk of dropping an expensive device – and it can be bulky and annoying to carry around when exercising.

Step into the Mighty Vibe. This little audio player picks up where the iPod Shuffle left off when it was shut down, but adds some cool new features like Spotify Premium and Amazon Music compatibility, voice playlist browsing, and Bluetooth. I decided to test it out to see how well it held up to the rigors of my daily workouts.

What is the Mighty Vibe?

The Mighty Vibe is an incredibly compact 1.5 x 1.5 inch audio player that has the capacity to store downloaded Spotify and Amazon Music playlists in its 8GB of memory. It features a small clip on the back and weighs less than an ounce, so you can clip it to your clothes and it will be virtually unnoticeable.

Unlike your phone, it doesn’t have a screen that could potentially distract you from your workouts, and its simple interface can be easily navigated by touch. The Vibe is drop and water resistant, and it connects to headphones wirelessly via Bluetooth. It also has an audio jack for connecting wired headphones.

The Mighty Vibe has five hours of battery life, which should be enough to see even the most avid fitness enthusiast through a couple of good workouts. It only takes about 20 minutes to get a 50% charge, so you can quickly recharge right before your workout if needed.

How the Mighty Vibe works

To use the Mighty Vibe, you must connect it wirelessly to an Android or iOS device running the associated app. Then you can transfer Spotify Premium and Amazon Prime playlists to it via Wi-Fi for later offline playback. When performing the transfer, you can choose from three quality levels, with the lowest providing the fastest synchronization.

What you need to know before buying the Mighty Vibe

There are a few things to keep in mind before purchasing the Mighty Vibe. More importantly, you cannot transfer MP3 to it. The only way to add music to it is through the Spotify Premium and Amazon Music playlists, so you’ll need at least one of those accounts to use it.

You may notice that the audio crackles and skips a bit when there are impacts, such as dropping it or accidentally bumping it against something, but the audio immediately returns to normal quality afterwards. Also, you’ll want to be very aware of turning it off. It’s easy to forget to do this and drain the battery completely without noticing.
