The Astell & Kern A & norma SR25 recently won a What Hi-Fi? Award in the portable music player category, having found a way to squeeze even more performance into its entry-level form factor than its predecessor, the award-winning older SR15.

The US company launched the player for £ 649 ($ 699, AU $ 1,199) in April in a Silver Moon solo finish, and there’s now a second colorway – Black Edition. Don’t worry, SR25 owners, the SR25 Black Edition simply introduces a new aesthetic, matching the silver version for features and performance.

Speaking of which, the impressive caliber of sound and functionality of the SR25 has led to a very comprehensive offering from Astell & Kern at this price point.

Support for music files (up to 32-bit / 384kHz, DSD256), storage (64GB and expandable), and battery life (21 hours) are enjoyable across the board, while the Richly detailed and pleasantly paced sound delivery of the SR25 seals its favorable fate.

Whichever color you choose – Silver Moon or Black Edition – the SR25 won’t disappoint those willing to upgrade their portable music game from their smartphone or a cheaper dedicated player.
